Take your content from one service to another in a few steps

You decided to create a website, hired domain and hosting and did everything as wanted. Only time has passed and you feel full of desire to migrate to another provider, or because you realize that the service is no longer meeting your expectations or even because it will cease to exist, something that is not uncommon.

At this point, the entrepreneur is full of doubts, such as: “Can I move everything I have on this server to another?“, “Will I lose all the content I have created so far and will I have to start from scratch?” And “For how much time will my site be down? Will this really hurt my sales?

All of these doubts are justifiable and really if you do not take some precautions you may end up losing information that is in your old service and staying a long time without having your website available to consumers.

For this to happen, just be aware of some points and the whole process should go well.

However, before beginning to enumerate some actions you must do to ensure a smooth migration, it is necessary to leave an alert: not all migration is equal or possible.

Each company that sells server hosting and hosting services has its own steps and processes, but there are some important actions that are common to all of them, and it is these actions that you should consider. Let’s see what they are?

Make the necessary backups

The backup is a feature that many people do not value even need one. Backing up means creating a copy of all the information you have in an environment – whether it is on a computer or your site – and saving it as security.

If you lose any data or have any problems, you can use the backup to restore the information. Anyone who wants to migrate hosting must make backups of all the directories and elements they want to take to the new service.

FTP backup saves data related to your site, such as texts, programming codes, and images. If you have FTP access to your hosting, just download the files and save. If the new hosting is similar to previous (same operating system, similar features, the same type of hosting, etc.) you upload! If you do not have access, you will need to make a request to the provider.

It is also interesting to make a backup of your database, where information about the site, clients, and products are, and the process is basically the same as FTP. If you have access, look for the option to export or backup the database. If not, contact the provider.

Lastly, also back up your emails, after all, you do not want to lose all your contacts from suppliers and customers if you are going to use a different email related to your new server, right?

Some administrative panels allow you to back up directly to the hosting, but you can also use tools such as Outlook or export and synchronize messaging software.

Hire a new service

Once you have all the information you need in your backups, it’s time to choose and hire a new service.

Take note of information such as RAM, disk space, whether or not there are visits per plan, amount of disk space, and what percentage of availability is guaranteed by the provider.

Do not forget to check other customers’ testimonials and get all your questions before hiring, to ensure that you are choosing the service and the plan that fits your needs.

Make the settings

Most providers have the first steps in setting up the service and the elements related to them. In the case of hosts, it is usually done to configure the domain first.

If you already have a registered domain address, you can continue using it; if not, you can hire a new one. Depending on the plan, this is also the time to configure the server or hosting operating system.

Upload files

Do you know the files you saved in backups? It’s time to upload them to your new environment.

In your hosting or new server, search for file manager or some way to import data, check the accepted extensions (such as .zip, .tar and .gz) and start uploading the files. If you prefer, you can do the same process with an FTP manager, such as Filezilla and WinSCP.

To migrate the data part (if any), you must first create a new database in your new hosting. Give a login name and password for management. When everything is ready, you can access your database and find the button to import there. Then just select the backup file and you’re done!

After creating your email boxes the process is also the same, find a place to import or upload files and upload the information that was copied from the old service.

After completing all the uploads, be sure to check if everything is working properly!

You must also update your domain’s DNS notes so that your address points to the content on the new server instead of the old one. Some providers have temporary domains, which you can use to track whether everything is right with the migration.
